Niall O'Higgins Award winner!

Date

One of BCI UK's research fellows, Dr Becky Birch, has won the prestigious Niall O'Higgins Award! The Niall O’Higgins Abstracts Symposium consisted of the eight best abstracts submitted to the 38th Congress of the European Society of Surgical Oncology (ESSO). Therefore, simply being in the symposium was a mark of success. Judged on its hypothesis, methods, and analysis, Becky's presentation came out top! The Congress took place in Budapest, 10-12 October.

Becky's presentation was titled 'The management of rectal cancer in older patients in England - a retrospective population based study'. It examined the use of major surgery and radiotherapy before surgery to treat rectal cancer. Its aim was to assess outcomes across the English NHS in relation to age. It demonstrated that older patients with rectal cancer were less likely than younger patients to receive these treatments. However, those older patients who did receive them had outcomes comparable to those of younger patients.

Congratulations!

Note: The Niall O'Higgins Award is named after Professor Niall O’Higgins a Past-President of ESSO, a recipient of the ESSO medal and Professor Emeritus of Surgery at University College Dublin.
